Email Attachment Limits

Your CC Communications email account has a size limit of 100mb per email. However, other email providers have different maximum email size limits. For example, Gmail has an email limit of 25mb per email. Yes, your CC Communications email allows an email size of 100mb but if the email account you are sending it to has an email limit lower than 100mb, your email will bounce back to your inbox.

An email attachment can cause large email sizes. For example, A large photo attachment or large pdf document can easily exceed the email limit resulting in your email recipient unable to receive your email. If you are sending your email to another CC Communications email account you can send up to 100 mb email size limit for emails and file attachments.

Why do email providers have maximum email size limits?

If email servers did not limit the size of emails, email servers could be overwhelmed with extremely large email files causing the email servers to stop functioning correctly or crash.

What happens when you send an email that is over the email client’s size limit?

If you send an email that exceeds the maximum email size limit of the recipient’s email provider, your email will bounce back and you will receive an email error in your mailbox.

The following are examples of email errors that you might receive in your inbox when your email bounces back:

  • Attachment size exceeds the allowable limit
  • 552: Message size exceeds maximum permitted
  • System Undeliverable, message size exceeds outgoing message size limit

Alternate ways to send large files through email

If you really need to send email files that exceed your email recipent’s email size and file attachment limits, there are two options available:

  • Break the large email and file attachment into emails with smaller file attachment sizes and send the emails separately. For example, send 10 photos per email instead of sending 50 photos per email. This method is time consuming and could potentially annoy your email recipients.
  • Upload your large file to a cloud-based file sharing service like Google DriveDropboxSalesHandy, or other file sharing services and attach or share a download link to your large file in the email.
